BSIS students collaborate with Pitt Business to redesign United Way website

What can four students do given 100+ hours in a two-week period? If you ask undergraduates at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences (iSchool), they can probably build you an impressive, custom-designed responsive website. As part of an independent study project, BSIS students Rachel Lazar, Michael Quach, Melodi Reich and Jasmine White redesigned and developed a new website for Pitt’s United Way that will replace their existing website in 2015. The University of Pittsburgh's School of Information Sciences (iSchool) is delighted to congratulate our December 2014 graduates! At the iSchool's winter recognition ceremony on Friday, December 5, more than 150 family, friends and supporters joined graduates at the William Pitt Union. The ceremony was led by Dean and Professor Ronald Larsen who charged graduates to remember the challenging lessons learned during their time at the iSchool as they go forth in their lives as Pitt alumni. Dean Larsen to collaborate with CMU on new library partnership

The Dean of Pitt’s iSchool, Ronald Larsen, is working with CMU to review options for future cross-institution library collaboration, as well as other new collaborative pathways. This Pitt-CMU library collaboration review will take into account input from library patrons and other local and regional stakeholders, paving the way for enhanced library resources at both universities.

Amelia Acker receives ProQuest Doctoral Dissertation award at ASIS&T 2014

Yu-Ru Lin receives Honorable Mention for paper at IEEE VIST 2014

The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences is pleased to share that Yu-Ru Lin received an Honorable Mention for her paper #FluxFlow: Visual Analysis of Anomalous Information Spreading on Social Media at IEEE VIST 2014 in the VAST 2014: TVCG Track. Lin, an assistant professor in the Information Science and Technology program, co-authored the paper with Jian Zhao, Nan Cao, Zhen Wen, Yale Song, and Christopher Collins. Learn more >

New at the iSchool: Certificates of Advanced Study in Big Data Analytics and Security Assured Information Systems

The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences (iSchool) is excited to announce the launch of two new Certificate of Advanced Study programs for post-baccalaureate and post-master’s students. The two new certificates, Big Data Analytics and Security Assured Information Systems, have been designed to provide an immersive experience for students who want to upskill into two of the most in-demand specializations for information professionals today. BSIS student Shakir Wellons on Pittsburgh Promise

The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences is pleased to highlight Shakir Wellons, an undergraduate student due to graduate in December 2014 from the information science program thanks to the Pittsburgh Promise. Although Shakir began his college career as a Computer Science major at Penn State, he discovered that it didn’t seem to be a good fit for him personally. Shakir explains his change to Information Science as a discipline simply. “I love technology and I value the connection between technology and people. I found that IS seemed to have more of a human element involved; meaning that it seemed to actually involve people more and it touched more on the business side of things.” His change to IS has been such a perfect fit, in fact, Shakir says he has “never looked back.” Learn more >

iSchool celebrates Alumni Awards winners and 2014 Legacy Laureate Debra King

The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences celebrated our 2014 Alumni Award winners on Friday, October 24 at 6:00 p.m. at the Information Sciences Building. After a brief reception during which award winners met current faculty, staff and students, iSchool alumnus and representative to the Pitt Alumni Association Sam Srinivas opened the ceremony. Sam introduced Dean Ronald Larsen who presented awards to Debra D. King (Distinguished Alumni Award) and Dr. Douglas C. Sicker (Professional Achievement Award). Dr. Yang Xu, the recipient of our Young Alumni Award, was unable to attend the festivities but Dean Larsen gave a brief review of Dr. Xu’s accomplishments to the assembled audience. Learn more.

iFest|TechShop Game Design Challenge now open

The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences is pleased to announce the iFest|TechShop Game Design Challenge is open and accepting submissions through Friday, October 10. The challenge is for students to work in teams of three to design and develop an interactive game. As part of the challenge, student teams are required to submit a proposal detailing their game idea and concept. Three student teams will be selected, based on their proposals, to develop working prototypes of their games using the tools and services at Pittsburgh's TechShop. Those three teams will present their game prototypes at iFest 2015 (Friday, Feb. 6). Learn more >

iSchool faculty and alumnus receive NSF award to develop curriculum for Security Assured Health Informatics

The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences (iSchool) congratulates iSchool faculty Drs. James Joshi, Konstantinos Pelechrinis, Balaji Palanisamy, Prashant Krishnamurthy, David Tipper and Michael Spring along with School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) faculty members iSchool alumnus Dr. Bambang Parmanto (PhD’92; MSIS’96) and Dr. Leming Zhou on receiving an award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The $897,055 award is for “A Curriculum for Security Assured Health Informatics,” a proposed joint curriculum of the iSchool and SHRS. Welcome back iSchool students!

The iSchool is excited to welcome all new and returning students for the fall term. This past week saw more than 180 new students attend orientation events. The incoming class is comprised of students from 15 different countries including Albania, Canada, China, Ecuador, Georgia, India, Iran, Kosovo, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Taiwan and the US. The iSchool is also delighted to welcome new faculty member Amelia Acker who will be teaching courses on archives, records management, and digital preservation in the Library and Information Science program. Fall 2014 Orientation begins

Orientation for students beginning in the fall term at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences (iSchool) begins Monday, August 18. The weeklong activities will kick off with activities designed to welcome international students and include a combination of group sessions, individual appointments and a campus tour. On Wednesday, August 20, JoAnn Kavalukas will host a special session for new MLIS students who have accepted placements in the Partner’s Program and the iSchool will offer a bonus session on “Surviving Grad School and Student Life.” Learn more >

iSchool welcomes Amelia Acker to faculty

The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences (iSchool) is pleased to welcome Assistant Professor Amelia Acker to the faculty. Dr. Acker joins us from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where she received her PhD in Information Studies in 2014. Her dissertation, Born Networked Records: A History of the Short Message Service Format, investigates “archival implications of born networked records created with mobile ICTs, including the creation and collection mobile telephony metadata, the automatic deletion of text message traces by mobile devices, and the possibilities for text messages as records in personal digital archives.” Dr. Acker received the 2014 ASIS&T ProQuest Doctoral Dissertation Award for this work under supervisor Professor Anne Gilliland, the first time this award has gone to an archival studies dissertation. The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences (iSchool) celebrates our 2014 summer graduates! At the iSchool’s summer recognition ceremony on Friday, July 25, more than 200 family, friends and supporters joined graduates at the O’Hara Student Center for the ceremony led by Associate Dean and Professor Martin B. H. Weiss. Weiss called upon graduates to look back on their many accomplishments with pride and reminded students of the centrality of information to many of the past year’s headlines. He charged graduates to apply what they learned at the iSchool for the betterment of society in their future careers and invited them to stay in touch as members of the iSchool community. Archival Education and Research Institute (AERI) a success

The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences (iSchool) hosted the sixth annual Archival Education and Research Institute (AERI) from July 13 through July 18. AERI provides a dynamic venue for archival researchers and teachers to interact in an intensive, collegial collaborative environment. Topics ranged from the grand challenges facing the field to the future of higher education and universities. The conference began with an opening reception sponsored by Pitt’s University Library System where attendees gathered to socialize after an intense day of plenaries, paper sessions, and workshops. More than 100 students and faculty from 11 countries attended the conference and presented on topics such as web infrastructures, archival representation, open government, material culture and archives, scholarly publishing, archival access, information culture and social justice. Young Alumni Profile: Telecommunications alum Saman Taghavi Zargar (PhD’14) at Cisco Systems

The School of Information Sciences (iSchool) is excited to report that recent Telecommunications and Networking alum, Dr. Saman Taghavi Zargar (PhD’14), has secured a position as Software Engineer (III) at Cisco Systems. Saman will be working as part of the Security Business Group (SBG) where he will be involved in proposing secure architectures for various Cisco products and for the next generation of Internet infrastructure, a topic that has always been of interest to him. When asked what he is most looking forward to, Sam replied, “Getting to see and feel the impact of my efforts toward securing the network infrastructure in the short term.” Learn more>

Inagurual Bernadette Callery Archives Lecture Series featuring Kirk Savage

The inaugural lecture of the Bernadette Callery Archives Lecture Series will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at 3:45 p.m. in the Frick Fine Arts Building at the University of Pittsburgh. The lecture series honors the memory of Dr. Bernadette Callery, a member of the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences. Dr. Callery taught in the Archives specialization of the Library and Information Science program. Prior to joining the faculty at the iSchool, Dr. Callery was the Museum Librarian at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Before her death, Dr. Callery thoughtfully established this lecture series, which was funded through a generous bequest. Learn more>

The iSchool remembers Professor Emerita Margaret Mary "Maggie" Kimmel

The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences (iSchool) regrets to announce the passing of renowned storyteller Professor Emerita Margaret Mary “Maggie” Kimmel. Dr. Kimmel passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2014. Kimmel was a born storyteller and a relentless advocate for children’s librarianship. She earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Library Science degrees at Dominican University and received her doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Library and Information Science in 1980. MLIS'13 alumna becomes Junior Fellow at the Library of Congress

The University of Pittsburgh's School of Information Sciences is pleased to report that Carley Altenburger is serving as a 2014 Junior Fellow at the Library of Congress. Carley is working in the Prints & Photographs Division under Brett Carnell and Mary Mundy, who are overseeing the project. Carley, and two other Fellows, will be working with two Twentieth century photographic collections related to architecture and design. Their primary activity will be processing slides that document the office of renowned American designers Charles and Ray Eames. A second project will be to review and make recommendations on processing photographic prints, negatives, transparencies, and digital photos by prominent architectural photographer Norman McGrath. They will also make selections from this collections to develop an exhibit highlighting the content and research value of the material. Learn more >

Leanne Bowler promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure

Bowler joined the iSchool in 2008, having earned her doctorate in Library and Information Science from McGill University. University of Pittsburgh designated National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense Research by NSA and DHS

The National Security Administration (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have designated the University of Pittsburgh as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense Research (CAE-R) for academic years 2014-2021. This designation reflects Pitt’s ability to meet the increasing demands of the program criteria and contributes to the protection of the National Information Infrastructure. Additionally, this designation helps to distinguish the strengths of each of the CAE institutions, benefitting not only the CAE, but also students, employers and hiring managers throughout the nation. iSchool remembers Professor Allen Kent

The iSchool at Pitt regrets to announce the passing of one of the foremost pioneers of Information Science, Distinguished Service Professor Allen Kent. Professor Kent passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2014. Celebrated for his tireless efforts in the field of information science, Kent received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the City College of New York, a certificate in metallurgical testing at New York University, and also served in the United States Air Force and the Air Documents Research Office in London, working on captured German documents during World War II. The iSchool celebrates graduates at spring 2014 recognition ceremony

The iSchool congratulates our spring Class of 2014 graduates on becoming alumni of the University of Pittsburgh! Dean Ronald L. Larsen led the iSchool Recognition Ceremony held on Sunday, April 27 at Alumni Hall and Candi Castleberry Singleton, Chief Inclusion and Diversity Officer at UPMC, gave the keynote address. Ms. Castleberry Singleton offered three tips to the new graduates: be grateful, be respectful, and be helpful. As part of her advice on being grateful, Castleberry Singleton asked the graduates to stand up, to look around at each other, and to say “thank you!” to everyone who helped them along the way. Advising graduates to be respectful, she reminded them that they will be remembered based on how they treated others. Learn more >

University of Pittsburgh: Top 10 for Cybersecurity

The University of Pittsburgh ranked 7th on a list of schools nationwide for its cybersecurity program. The survey, conducted by the Ponemon Institute on behalf of Hewlett-Packard, queried approximately 2,000 certified information technology security practitioners. Participants were asked to rank their top five schools from a list of more than 400 institutions of higher education. Overall rankings were based on respondents’ perceptions of academic excellence and rigor, the experience and expertise of program faculty, the relevant experience and background of students and graduates and the overall professional reputation of the program in the cybersecurity community. In February 2014 CRC Press published Big Data: Techniques and Technologies in Geoinformatics, edited by Dr. Hassan Karimi. James King publishes "Say Nothing" in Archives and Records

A paper by School of Information Sciences (the iSchool) doctoral student James Allison King is highlighted by publisher Routledge for presenting some strong arguments and a different angle on the implications of the Boston College subpoenas. King is a second-year doctoral student in the Library and Information Science program where he works with Dr. Richard Cox. His current research interests lie in the intersection of archives and questions of cultural memory and conflict, particularly those addressing how archives function within communities fractured by war and other historical traumas. Learn more >

David Tipper: IEEE Guest Editor and Top Ten Author

David Tipper was Guest Editor of a two-part Feature Topic in IEEE Communications Magazine on Advances in Network Planning. Part I: Fixed Networks and Clouds was published in January 2014 and centered on the technological side of networks and their interconnection with cloud infrastructures. Part II: Wireless Networks and Traffic Uncertainty was published in the February edition and highlighted the evolving methodologies currently changing the shape of network planning. Learn more >

School of Information Sciences Receives NIST Award

The University of Pittsburgh School of Information Sciences is one of three schools awarded the FY 2013 Curricula Development Cooperative Agreement Program by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The school’s project, “Standards: People, Process, Products and Productivity – Focus on Information Technology Standards,” earned top honors by proposing ten modules on technical standards that can be used in the undergraduate or graduate information science curriculum. The school will work with NIST to strengthen education and learning about standards and standardization under PI Michael Spring and co-PIs James Joshi, Prashant Krishnamurthy, David Tipper and Martin Weiss. Cybersecurity Expert David Thaw to Join Pitt Faculties

The University of Pittsburgh School of Law has hired Assistant Professor David Thaw, a law and technology expert and frequent presenter on issues of cybersecurity, privacy regulation, and cybercrime. Thaw will hold a secondary faculty appointment at the School of Information Sciences (the iSchool). Currently an affiliated fellow of the Information Society Project at Yale Law School and a visiting assistant professor at the University of Connecticut School of Law, Thaw will assume his new positions at Pitt on July 1, 2014. iSchool hosts faculty from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications

The School of Information Sciences (the iSchool) was proud to host an informational session for ten faculty from the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) on Monday, January 13 at the Information Sciences Building in the heart of the University of Pittsburgh’s campus. The iSchool congratulates December 2013 graduates!

The School of Information Sciences (the iSchool) congratulates our December 2013 graduates on becoming alumni of the University of Pittsburgh! Dean Larsen led the iSchool Recognition Ceremony held on Friday, December 6 at the William Pitt Union and Jennie Crowley (MLIS ’11) invited students to join the School of Information Sciences Alumni Society (SAS). Four of our students published electronic theses and dissertations as part of the culmination of their studies: Reham Al-Issa, PhD (LIS ‘13), Janet Ceja, PhD (LIS ‘13), Yi-Ling Lin, PhD (IST ‘13) and Angela Horneman (MSIT ‘13).
