David Tipper: IEEE Guest Editor and Top Ten Author

David Tipper was Guest Editor of a two-part Feature Topic in IEEE Communications Magazine on Advances in Network Planning. Part I: Fixed Networks and Clouds was published in January 2014 and centered on the technological side of networks and their interconnection with cloud infrastructures. Part II: Wireless Networks and Traffic Uncertainty was published in the February edition and highlighted the evolving methodologies currently changing the shape of network planning.

In the introduction to the series, the importance of network planning is highlighted for an industry which has become increasingly cost competitive. The articles selected for both parts of the series encompassed a variety of subjects, all with the intent to provide a practical resource to anyone interested in the network planning topic. No stranger to IEEE publications, a recent paper co-authored with Dr. James Joshi and PhD student Saman Taghavi Zargar has been in the Top Ten of the most popular articles published in ComSoc periodicals since its pre-print in September 2013. The article, “A Survey of Defense Mechanisms Against Distributed Denials of Service Flooding Attacks,” was published in IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials, Vol. 15, No. 4, pp. 2046-2069, Fourth Quarter, 2013.

Tipper, Associate Professor and Chair of the Telecommunications and Networking Program, co-edited the series with Dominic Schupke and Oscar Gonzalez de Dios.
