The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences is excited to be recognized by TheBestSchools.org for its online MLIS degree — coming in at 8 out of 20 programs recognized for their academic excellence.

According to TheBestSchool’s:

"A Master in Library and Information Science degree prepares graduates to play a vital role in the evolving global information society. Library and information professionals help strengthen the links among individuals, information, technology, and libraries.

Any institution maintaining a large assortment of information, whether it’s electronic, print, or both, needs a professional to keep it up-to-date, organized, and easily accessible.

A Master in Library Science can lead to a career in research libraries, technical libraries, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, colleges, public and private schools, companies, museums, as well as information collection and delivery organizations.

Many employers require candidates to complete an American Library Association accredited program."

Pitt’s on-campus MLIS degree has been continually accredited by the ALA and most recently received reaccreditation without conditions through 2020. According to the editors, one of the primary reasons Pitt’s online program was noted for distinction was that “the degree offers educational skills and theoretical knowledge students need to advance as information professionals in several fields and library facilities.”

This combination of educational skills and theoretical knowledge is critical to the MLIS program’s continued success and recognition as one of the top programs in the nation. According to the 2015 US News and World Report rankings, Pitt’s on-campus MLIS program ranks among the Top 10.
