Poster Competition

Poster Competition co-Chairs:

  • 12:00 noon-2:00 pm

Posters will highlight completed work as well as speculative and late-breaking results from all programs: Information Science & Technology, Library & Information Science, and Telecommunications & Networking. Thre will be two competitions: one for PhD students and one for Master's and BSIS students. The student should be the sole author or the first author (if the faculty advisor is a co-author.) Recently-published posters may be submitted to this competition providing the results are current and the student was author. A template and size requirements are provided below.

You will present your poster to a judging committee of iSchool faculty on April 3rd.  Prizes will be awarded for:

  • First Place — $600 worth of items from Amazon.com
  • Second Place — $300 worth of items from Amazon.com

REGISTER BY MARCH 22, 2013 HERE.

Provide poster title, author name and contact information, degree program, and 250 word abstract. All posters will be submitted for production on March 31, 2013. Poster printing will be provided by the iSchool. Students are required to be present on April 3rd for the judging.

All posters must be either a high-resolution (300 DPI) PDF or a  high-resolution (300 DPI) PPTX file. All files should be the appropriate size for printing.

Posters should be no more than 30 x 38 inches. You can create a poster that is smaller than this, and they can be either portrait or landscape in orientation.

All poster files should be sent to kshaffer@sis.pitt.edu. If your file is larger than 4 MB, please bring it to Room 520 on a thumb drive. Please do NOT put a number on your poster; they will be numbered according to order of submission Tags with the correct poster number will be provided.

Mario Kart Races, Yoostar, and other games 

  • 12:30PM - 3:30PM, 3rd floor IS Building
  • Open to all iSchool students

Come to see the posters, stay to play.  This informal event will give you an opportunity to see the posters, support your friends, and just have a good time. 


Thursday, April 4th

iSchool Professional Engagement Fair

5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., 3rd floor IS Building

This event will offer professional development activities (such as the cover letter writing workshop requested by those who attended Professional Development Day), an opportunity to network with alums, and a chance to interact informally with select local employers.   

Friday, April 5th

Bots and Books Design Challenge

  • 11:00 a.m. – noon setup (robot teams only)
  • noon – 1:00 p.m. judging, 3rd floor IS Building. 

Prizes will be awarded for:

  • First Place — $400 worth of items from amazon.com, per team member
  • Second Place — $300 worth of items from amazon.com, per team member
  • Third Place - $200 worth of items from amazon.com, per team member

Picnic Lunch 

  • 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., iSchool Student Collaboration Center; open to all. 

Mobile Application Design Competition 

  • 2:30PM - 3:30PM, 3rd floor IS Building
  • Open to all BSIS students only
  • Prizes:
    • 1st Place — $200 worth of items from amazon.com, per team member
    • 2nd Place — $100 worth of items from amazon.com, per team member
    • 3rd Place — $60 worth of items from amazon.com, per team member
  • Students can compete individually or in teams 2-3 people
  • Apps may have been designed for a class, independent study, or created on one’s own.
  • There are no required themes or content…simply select an idea that you like and prepare a description of the app including the functionality and the intended audience. Please tell us why your app is useful or helpful, what makes it different, and identify its use – is it a productivity tool or a game?
  • Create mockups (sketches or PowerPoints) of your app, appropriate for the apps intended audience. Let us know some of the benefits of the interface – is it fast, easy to use, engaging?
  • Implement/build your app. Scores will be based on creativity, the significance of your app, and the quality of the implementation.
  • You will need to be present for the judging on April 5th from 2:30PM – 3:30 p.m. on the 3rd floor of the IS Building
  • Students wishing to compete in the iFest Mobile App Competition must RSVP to Mike Depew at  mdepew@pitt.edu by April 3, 2013.

Remote Control Helicopter Obstacle Course

  • 2:30PM – 3:30PM, free play
  • 3:30PM - 4:30PM, competition
  • Open to all iSchool students
  • Students must compete in teams of 3-4. 
  • Prizes TBD – will be gifts from industry sponsors.  Stay tuned for more details!

Teams will have a few moments to learn to fly the remote control helicopter.  They then will have several courses through which to navigate the helicopter.  The team with the best total time across all courses wins.  Students wishing to compete in the Obstacle Course must RSVP to Mike Depew at mdepew@pitt.edu with all team member names by April 3, 2013.

Social Hour at Joe Mama’s Restaurant

  • 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Sponsors - the School of Information Sciences Graduate Organization (SISGO), the Student Chapter of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) and the Doctoral Guild.

We will host hors d’oeuvres and soft drinks in the downstairs room of this Oakland restaurant for all iSchool students, staff, and faculty. We hope to see you there!  

Saturday, April 6th

Board Games, Yoostar (i.e. movie karaoke), and other games 

  • 11:00AM – 1:00PM, 3rd floor IS Building
  • Open to all iSchool students

This is an informal opportunity for students to spend time together, support any friends participating in the obstacle course, take a break if you are in town for the PittOnline weekend, and just to have a good time. Hope to see you there!
